What is a Charter School?
A charter school is a public school of choice, no tuition is charged. We are funded by the state on a per pupil basis, the same as other public schools.
The differences from a traditional public school are:
- Charter schools must be authorized by a governing body. This body then oversees the school as well as the state and federal bodies that govern all public schools. Byron Center Charter School (BCC) is authorized by Grand Valley State University.
- Charter schools are allowed to limit class size. BCC Board of Education has limited our class size to 20 students per grade level.
- Charter schools do not have district boundaries, their district covers the entire state.
- Charter schools can select a focus. BCC has chosen fundamental academics and character as its focus.
